House
House music is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged from the underground club scene of Chicago in the early 1980s. Its name is derived from The Warehouse, a club where resident DJ Frankie Knuckles, the 'Godfather of House,' pioneered the sound by mixing disco classics with drum machines and synthesizers. House is defined by its steady 4/4 time signature, a tempo typically between 118-135 BPM, and a prominent bass drum on every beat. It builds upon the soulful, uplifting spirit of disco, often incorporating gospel-inspired vocals, piano riffs, and deep, groovy basslines to create an atmosphere of unity, celebration, and release on the dancefloor. It is the foundational genre for countless styles of electronic music that followed.
