Kwaito
Part of House
Kwaito is a genre that emerged in Soweto, South Africa, during the 1990s post-apartheid era. It originated from slowing down American House music tracks to a much slower tempo (typically 100–110 BPM) and infusing them with local African sounds, hip-hop attitudes, and rhythmic speech (not quite rapping, not quite singing). Known for its catchy melodic hooks, deep basslines, and 'pot-banging' percussion, Kwaito is the cultural ancestor of modern South African electronic genres like Afro House and Amapiano.
