    Dubstep

    Part of Bass Music

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the early 2000s, emerging as a dark, mutated evolution of UK Garage and 2-step. It is structurally defined by a tempo of roughly 140 BPM, but with a distinctive 'half-time' rhythm (kick on beat one, snare on beat three) that creates a spacious, lurching groove. The genre's sonic signature is its heavy emphasis on sub-bass frequencies—often felt physically rather than heard—and the use of Low Frequency Oscillation (LFO) to manipulate bass timbres, creating the iconic 'wobble' sound. Early dubstep emphasized atmosphere, silence, and dub-reggae influenced reverberation, creating a brooding, urban tension that contrasts with the more aggressive mid-range distortion found in its later commercial variations.
