Glitch
Part of Sound Manipulation
Glitch is an experimental subgenre of electronic music that emphasizes the use of digital errors, fragmented sounds, and irregular rhythms to create complex, textured compositions. Instead of traditional beats and melodies, glitch artists use samples of audio artifacts like clicks, pops, static, and other “mistakes” in digital audio—often generated by manipulating malfunctioning or “glitchy” equipment. The genre focuses on micro-level sound design, with an intricate layering of tiny sounds that create a fragmented, broken aesthetic. Glitch is highly influenced by technology and sound manipulation, turning digital flaws into musical features, and is often found in the works of experimental artists interested in pushing the boundaries of rhythm, texture, and audio processing. The result is a distinctive, abstract listening experience that emphasizes texture and sonic unpredictability over conventional structure.
