    Plunderphonics

    Part of Experimental

Plunderphonics is a genre and compositional philosophy, named by composer John Oswald in 1985, that constructs new musical works entirely out of existing audio recordings. Unlike hip-hop or electronic music that may use samples to build a beat, Plunderphonics treats the history of recorded audio as a raw palette for collage, often explicitly using recognizable sources from pop culture, news broadcasts, or commercials. The genre is characterized by radical recontextualization, where familiar sounds are chopped, layered, pitched, and distorted to create something entirely new, often serving as a satire or critique of mass media and copyright laws. It creates an uncanny listening experience where the focus is on the transformation of 'stolen' cultural artifacts.
