    Musique Concrète

    Part of Experimental

Musique concrète is an experimental music genre that emerged in the 1940s, using recorded sounds—such as environmental noises, spoken word, and mechanical sounds—as raw material for composition. Unlike traditional music that relies on instruments, it focuses on manipulating these recordings through techniques like splicing, looping, and distortion to create new sound textures. Pioneered by French composer Pierre Schaeffer, musique concrète emphasizes the creative arrangement of sound itself rather than melody or harmony, and is considered a precursor to modern electronic music and sound art. Its innovative use of everyday noises transformed the landscape of music composition and studio production.
