    Noise & Distortion

    Part of Experimental

Noise & Distortion is a radical genre of experimental music that abandons traditional musical structures like melody, harmony, and rhythm in favor of dissonance, texture, and sonic intensity. Rooted in the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, it explores the aesthetic potential of 'unwanted' sounds—such as feedback, static, hiss, machine hum, and extreme distortion. This genre spans a vast dynamic range, from the ear-splitting, monolithic walls of sound found in Harsh Noise and Power Electronics to the barely audible, microscopic textures of Lowercase. It is often confrontational and visceral, treating sound as a physical force designed to challenge the listener's endurance and redefine the boundaries of what constitutes music.
