    Broken beat

    Part of Breakbeat

Broken beat is a genre of electronic music that emerged in the late 1990s, primarily in the UK, blending elements of jazz, funk, and electronic dance music. It is characterized by its complex, syncopated rhythms and 'broken' drum patterns, where the beats are often fragmented or off-beat, giving the music a laid-back yet intricate feel. Broken beat features deep basslines, smooth melodies, and a fusion of live instruments (such as bass, keys, and horns) with electronic production. The genre has a soulful, groovy vibe and often includes elements of jazz improvisation, creating a smooth yet experimental sound. Artists like Bugz in the Attic and Mark de Clive-Lowe helped shape the genre, which has influenced genres like future jazz and nu-jazz.
