Minimal Wave
Part of New Wave
Minimal Wave is a genre characterized by stripped-down, lo-fi electronic structures that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Originally circulated on limited-run cassettes by underground artists, it sits between Synth-pop and Industrial. The sound is defined by the use of vintage analog synthesizers and drum machines (like the Roland CR-78), monotonous or robotic vocals, and catchy but melancholic melodies. The term was popularized in the 2000s by Veronica Vasicka to describe this specific wave of DIY electronic music that favored minimalism over the commercial polish of mainstream New Wave.
