Nu-jazz
Part of Downtempo
Nu jazz is a genre that blends elements of jazz with modern electronic music, creating a fusion of live instruments and digital production. Emerging in the late 1990s and early 2000s, nu jazz incorporates influences from genres like funk, soul, house, and ambient, while maintaining the improvisational and melodic qualities of traditional jazz. It often features smooth, groovy basslines, complex rhythms, and jazz-inspired melodies, combined with electronic effects, sampling, and synthesized sounds. The genre can range from relaxed, atmospheric tracks to more energetic, upbeat rhythms, offering a fresh take on jazz for contemporary audiences. Artists like St. Germain, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Jazzanova helped define the nu jazz sound.
